Bänder und Bedienungsanleitungen / Ribbons and Manuals

I don't know about you, but I hate manuals. Usually, especially for technical manuals, I get the impression that the author mainly had the goals to feel really clever himself and to make the reader feel too stupid to live, let alone unstand the instructions.

I received my card reader yesterday, that little device that lets my customers pay by EC- or credit card in my shop or on fairs.
The author of the manual definitely achieved the above mentioned goals. I've been sitting here for an hour, the device in one hand, the manual in the other and have said "huh???" about 27 times already.

Very much unlike the effects the other parcel I received yesterday had on me. Lovely woven ribbons from "Blaubeerstern".
Surely there was as much thought and planning poured into THAT product, one doesn't need a manual for it and one can simply enjoy.

Ich könnte behaupten..../ I could claim.....

.... that I remembered all by myself. Would be a lie. I asked the friendly lady from my Danish wholesale company.
It's "Love Grows" by Sharon Holland for Fabri-Quilt (At least I got the thing about the "turquoise" right)

Back from the big H&H market in Cologne. I have no idea how people can walk around in that place all day - or even several days. After 3 hours I was in sensory overload and didn't want to see anything anymore. Not even pretty fabrics.

But by then I had already made some bounty: "Gypsy Bandana" from Michael Miller / Pillow & Maxvield in two color lines - and another fabric series .... and I don't have the faintest what it was called, who designed it or who produced it. I just know that I ordered the complete line.

That's how it works - you barely pass your 50th birthday, and dementia sets in. I just remember that it had lots of turquoise in it and that it immediately grabbed my attention. That has to be enough.

Now my feet are aching, I'm tired and I need coffee. Hope you like these fabrics, I'll show you the others when my brain resumes functioning.

Die Geschmäcker sind verschieden - Can't argue about taste

Ergo musste ein Hotelzimmer her.

The „Penelope“ quilt is finally done (this is the back), the e-book for the „quilt-as-you-go“ version almost and today I am going to continue my cutting-charm-packs-marathon. Still have to cut 16,500 (!!!) 5” squares until the “Nadelwelt” fair in Karlsruhe next month – and there’s the jelly rolls and the layer cakes…FUN!!!

But I didn’t really want to talk about that. I wanted to talk about different tastes. I am spoiled in this respect. For the past 10 months – ever since I opened my little shop – there are constantly nice, fabric addicted women coming in here, making the appropriate noises and saying the right things: “Oohhhhhh, this is so cute…. Love your fabrics…..would love to have a sewing room like that…. Can I move in here?” Then I’m happy. About the fact that there are so many nice women who share my love for these kinds of fabrics, that they are my customers and that they usually come back.

But of course – that’s not always the case. Recently a very elegant elderly lady entered my shop, stood in the entrance, looked around. Sighed and said: “Finally I get here and I thought…. Well….. that you would have something….pretty.” Another sigh. And then she just turned around and left. Okayyyyyyyy….

On the other hand – it happens to me all the time, too – I hear all kinds of good things about a shop or a restaurant or some other establishment, go there and…. Return home disappointed and often times rather perplexed.

An example: Some time ago the husband and I went to see a concert in another city. I had heard lots of praise about a brand new hotel – how beautiful, how tasteful, how luxurious it was supposed to be. And we were in luck – they had a cancellation and we could have the “wedding suite” for the price of a double room. Yay!

We get there after the concert, open the door to our suite – and almost fell over backwards.
First – lighting that must have been planned for carrying out open heart surgery. And in this blinding light, we saw the highlight of this wedding suite.

Mirrors.

Everywhere – the walls, the ceiling, even in the bathroom. If up to this moment you thought that trying on bathing suits in a changing room under neon lights is as bad as it gets – let me tell you, THIS was wayyyyyy worse.
Only thing one can do is turn off the lights and go to sleep – fast.

But – some interior designer MUST have thought that this is IT.

As I said – can’t argue about taste.

Timing

Außer was diesen Sonntag angeht.

Wasn't that an absolutely gorgeous Saturday? And since the forecast started predicting this around the middle of the week I thought - why not invite the whole family for a BBQ? And since Saturday is usually a bit more busy - at home and in my shop - lets do it on Sunday.

Yes, the forecast also claimed that Saturday would be warm and sunny - and that Sunday would be cold and rainy. But they are habitual liars.

Except with respect to this Sunday. It's pouring outside, temperatures are around 57 F and in about 2 hours the whole family, including children, grandchildren, parents and siblings will get here to do some bbq-ing. Oh well.

The little birdies who moved into my bird houses will probably laugh their butts off watching us throwing meat on the grill while shivering uncontrollably. That's just how it goes - timing is everything.

UFOs & The Peter Principle

"Oh Gott-oh-Gott - meine armen Kinder.

Some of you may have heard of the "Peter-Principle". For those of you who haven't heard of this rather disturbing theory, it goes something like this:

In any given hierachy one will be promoted for competence and doing a good job - until the point where you will have reached your very own level of incompetence and you are in way over your head.

Now - I always like to consider myself special - and the Peter Principle is no exception.

I don't really need a hierachy or a boss who promotes me to get to that point. I am perfectly capable of doing that all by myself.

I don't need to be asked whether I would like seconds. Or thirds. I always do. Any time and with just about everything. More kids, bigger garden, more hobbies, more work. The result will hardly ever result in standing ovations. And although this is all my own doing, even I realize that it's not exactly good for my peace of mind to always feel that something or someone is being short changed at any given time.

That leads to panic reactions. And the constant effort to make up for those things that got neglected.
"Oh-god-my-poor-roses.... I really have to..." - and then its snip-snip-snip for hours on end. Because - I had to plant more than 50 different rose bushes over time - they're not exactly back to presentable condition in 5 minutes time. And then there's my lovely big veggie garden - and the greenhouse! Looking downright awful!

or......

"Oh-god-my-poor-kids... All week long, nothing but 30 minute chop-chop food from the wok". And then I am standing in my kitchen at 6 am on a Sunday morning, kneading the yeast doe for some freshly baked bread, just to give them the feeling that mom is trying.

This morning, I somehow paid attention to all those UFO's in my workshop. The little fabric covered box that has been standing around half-finished for months. And the Penelope quilt. And two half-finished pillows and another quilt top....

So - this weekend has been declared UFO weekend. All unfinished objects will be tackled.

Which of course doesn't touch the root of the problem - this unfortunate tendency to always add a little more, until one doesn't do anything right and thoroughly because there just isn't enough time.

Needless to say, the one who practically never gets any time and attention is the husband. One fine day he will take off with a 20 year old, hobby-child-pet-and job-less blonde - and really... who could blame him?

Delilah, Sugar&Spice, Penelope III

Eure Grete

This morning, around 9 am, I had to leave my workshop for a while to tidy some things up in the house. When I came back, the husband was standing in the door. With that one, special raised eyebrow. The reason for that eyebrow were quite a few lovely, big boxes that had arrived in the meantime from two different fabric wholesalers.

Or maybe that my workshop starts being rather overcrowded with fabrics and finished products, so you can barely turn around, let alone find space for more fabric bolts.

Or it just could have been the knowledge, that I will simply take some of the things I find less exciting (like batting rolls or those boring uni-colored fabrics one sometimes needs) and store them in his office.

In any case - he didn't seem to be all that thrilled. But I definitely was.
Now they are in my shop - 31 wonderful, romantic, sugary fabrics from Tanya Whelan's "Delilah" collection.

And 18 new fabrics (another 6 are supposed to arrive soon) from Riley Blake's "Sugar & Spice" collection.

Oh.... and a few more Penelope fabrics as well - one line that's combined with black, another with light blue. Which can be combined with the red ones, or the black and the blue together, or....

All of them (except for Sugar & Spice - I'll wait until I get the rest of them) are available from the bolt or as charm packs, layer cakes and jelly rolls.

Talk to you soon, hugs,
Grete
